On our 4th day we decided to take a ferry to one for the islands to snorkel some more. And while the larger island Culebra is more popular we decided to go to Island de Vieques. This island is known for its beautiful beaches being constantly praised and ranked as one of the beast in the Caribbean. Here you can experience beaches with their raw beauty, free of development they are landscaped by nature alone. I have now learned that we should of stayed on the island for a night, there is much more to do there then we had been told originally. Bahía Bioluminiscente being one of the top reasons, the fairy dose not go after dark so in order to see the best bio bay in Puerto Rico you would have to spend the night here. Its possible you could fly back after but I did not look into that. Another reason is we decided not to go to the busy sides of the island but we missed seeing some really pretty beaches as well as the black sand beach Playa Negrita.

We got to the docks a few hours early, we were told to arive early to make sure we got tickets. lines can be long and ferries can be delyed due to weather. We spent a long time in the wrong line for tickets, so make sure you are in the right one! The ferry to Vieques island from Ceiba is $2 per person (one way). Lots of people got sea sick on the ferry, if you are prone to it remember some motion sickness pills or patches.

Schedule for ferry

When we got off the ferry and got a taxi, asking the driver to take us to a good spot to go snorkeling. He took us to Caracas Beach that was previously the Red Beach. It had rained the night before so the water was very muddy. We couldn't see anything through the water so we didnt stay to long. We found another cab driver waiting on the beach, and he took us on a tour around the island.

Showing us the wild horses and the La Gran Ceiba tree that is the islands oldest tree. This tree is over 300+ years old is the 3rd most popular tourist site in Puerto Rico. The tree is starting to bloom again after the 2019 hurricane, healing its self from the damage that was caused. This tree is sacred to the locals and tourists alike, they do ask that you respect it when visiting and do not climb on it.

After this the driver took us to mosquito- bay pier to go snorkeling, it was so scenic here and there was an abundance of fish to see. We talked with another group that was there and they told us the best time to go and snorkel there was in the morning, that's when the sea turtles come to eat off the allergy in the bay.
