Isla Mujeres

The Mayans worshiped Ixchel as a moon, fertility, childbirth, and healing goddess. When Mayan girls started their journey from childhood to adulthood, they would journey to the island to seek guidance from Ixchel on their new phase of spiritual maturity and physical changes. The island had a temple dedicated to the goddess, that was inhabited by the priestesses of Ixchel and her entourage of women. When the Spanish conquistadors invaded in the 16th century, they saw all the women and the statues of Ixchel on the island, and named it  "Island of Women."

Now it is a popular place for tourists to visit, with beautiful beaches and ocean life to enjoy. There is something for everyone to do there. The ferry takes you from a port in Cancun to Isla Mujeres multiple times during the day, but they do not allow cars on the island so you can rent a golf cart once you arrive.

Turtle Farm

We came to Isla Mujeres to visit the turtle farm Tortugranja, a conservation center at the Southern tip of the island. Here, they are dedicated to protecting and rehabilitating sea turtles. By gathering eggs off the beach, raising hatchlings and helping turtles that have been injured.

This center offered the chance to feed turtles and to learn about the different stages of their lives. While we were not allowed to feed the babbies, we got to see them swimming around open tanks, giving 3/4 of them a chance at life that they would not of had in the open ocean. There are also tanks with other marine life to see and learn about, which the center helps rehabilitate.

There are reports that the center closed in 2022-2023 but in 2024 there are reports that it was open again. They sidgest to double check that it is open before going.
