Petra

April  19, 2023

A city carved out of the limestone of the walls that protect it. Petra the rose city is believed to of been carved by a Napatian tibe and was hidden from the west until 1812. For more than six centuries during the height of the city's reign, Petra was the center of the incense and spice route. Linking the Mediterranean world with frankincense, myrrh, silk, silver, gold, and rare woods from the East and from Africa. This ancient site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

Visiting the city of Petra

The best time to visit Petra is first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds and it's cooler out. You want to be sure to get a Petra pass before going to Jordan but before going to Pertra for sure. You will still need to get in line to get your ticket once you enter Petra, but if you have a multi-day pass on the second day you can enter early. The ticket booth opens at 6:30 but the gates open at 6:00 if you already have your ticket. Everything we found online told us to wear sneakers or good hiking boots, I was fine in my sandals and my mom made it around in her flip-flops. If your not use to either of these I would recommend something more sturdy but we were fine with them.

When we entered we were ushered in by a large group of local dogs that were waiting for the gates to open with us. An encouraging scratch behind the ear and we had our own guides from the ticket booths through part of the Siq.

What to pack

Clothing- Going through Petra it's a good idea to wear layers in the morning, as it can get chilly in the Siq's shadows. If you plan on spending all day in Petra your coolest layer should be light and flowy, try to dress with some conservancy in mind for the locals too. We wore scarves but for sun protection, and an extra layer in the morning. Sunglasses or a hat to help protect from the sun is very important as well.

Snacks- We always bring granola bars when we travel, so we had a few of those in our camera bags. We also had with us our hydro-flasks with how hot it was I'm really glad we brought these with us to keep our water cool. Electrolyte powder was a big help for us as well staying hydrated is very important in the heat! There are shops all along the trails, most sell water or other drinks with some snacks. In the middle of the city of Petra, there are two restaurants as well to get something while you're there. They don't check your bags going in though if you want to bring lunch in with you.

Extra things-  We of course had our camera bags, and I brought my fisheye lens for wide-angle pictures. For pictures, I also had a portable tripod that had a Bluetooth remote, that allowed for some good pictures with both my phone and my camera. Even if you are just planning on walking to the Treasury you will be looking at a mile there and back. With having weak leg issues I was sure to bring my "leg cramp" cream to help as we did the full hike in one day. I also brought with us some chaffing lotion to help prevent any thigh rub, even though we were in longer shorts. Bringing a shopping bag if you don't have extra room in your bag would be a good idea too in case you find anything you want to buy from the locals. Anything else you may need throughout the day of course you want to be sure you have as well. I always like to bring a notebook with me to write anything I might learn along the way.

Rides and tours

Horse rides from the main gate to the top of the Siq, is included in your entrance ticket but the handler will expect a tip of about 5JD per horse. â€‹

Horse carriages and golf carts are both available to take you through the Siq and can be arranged in the visitor center. You can do it on the website as well.

Guided tours can be arranged in the visitor center as well as on the site.

Everyone talks about how badly the animals are treated, and don't recommend riding them. While it was hot and the animals looked tired, they had food and were well watered. If you are able and willing to walk you can always get pictures with the animals on site.
