Lake Nakuru &Naivasha
January 17-18 2020 day 3-4
Lake Nakuru is one of the few national parks in Kenya that is fully fenced in with paved trails that can be driven on. This electric fence that surrounds the park is for the protection of the black and white rhinos that live there against the poachers. Lake Nakuru National Park currently has 150 rhinos living there, 80% of which are white rhinos and the remaining 20% black.

Lake Naivasha the lake is made up of a depression that was formed by the tectonic plates being pulled away from each other. Due to the culmination of water in the valley floor, lake Naivasha is the only freshwater lake in the Rift Valley. making this area an ideal place for hippos who can't survive in salt water.

Rothschild's Giraffe
In western Kenya and eastern Uganda, the Rothschilds giraffe lives wild in a few protected desert and savanna plains that are protected areas. They stand between 16 and 19 feet tall and are distinguished from other giraffes by not only their dark orange and brown patches surrounded by areas of beige but by their ossicones as well. Most giraffes have two ossicones or horn-like growths on top of their head, but the Rothschild's giraffe has a third in the center of its forehead as well as one smaller one behind each ear.
Lake Nakuru is the only sanctuary in Kenya where you will see the Rothhschild's giraffe. To protect these animals that were put on the endangered list back in 2010 due to having an estimate of only 1,399 mature giraffes in the wild, this is one of the few parks that is fenced completely in. On our trip, we were lucky enough to see a family of them eating among the trees with a little baby with them.

When going to the famous giraffe manor in Nairobi these are the types of giraffes you get to encounter. And on the other side of the yard on the same property is the giraffe center. It's much cheaper to get into the giraffe center to have your personal encounter with a giraffe and while you won't get the Instagram window picture you can still share a kiss with one over a food pellet!

English and Swahili
Lake Naivasha
The freshwater of Lake Naivasha makes it an ideal place for hippos where there isn't water for miles. For $30 apiece (cash) we went out in a boat in the lake with hippos. By standing on their back feet they stick their heads above water so they can breathe around every 5 minutes. Hippos don't have sweat glands so they have to stay in the water when it is out outside so they don't dehydrate.
Much of the lake is surrounded by forests of the yellow-barked Acacia Xanthophlea, known as the yellow fever tree. They got this name because when the English came they noticed that people around these trees tended to catch malaria. Naivasha is known as a world-class birding destination, abounding with bird life.
